The Wonders of Peru
Lima, Peru's capital and largest city is
also the 5th largest city in South America. Founded in
1535, by the conquistador Pizarro, "The City of Kings" would
become the most important city on the Pacific for Spain. About
one-third of the people live around this area. The Incas
settled the area in the 15th century, until Pizarro arrived and
conquered them. It is the 17th most populated city in the
world and contains the most Chinese in Latin America. Lima was
the Spanish government's main city with the most power and
authority of all her colonies.
There are many parks in the city, most of which contain
different types of architecture and fountains. The largest
fountain in the world is located there and called the Magical
Circuit of Water. The constant influx of immigration and
colonization has created a mix of Spanish, Asian and Andean
culture; which has influenced the cuisine and the grand museums,
that are world renown.
The beaches along the city's coastline are very busy during the
summer months and many theaters, clubs, hotels and restaurants
have set up shop there. Lima is Peru's main business and
cultural city because of its heritage and proximity to the
ocean. It has a much slower pace then most of Latin
American cities. One of the mystiques of the city is the haze or
mist that does settle over the city much of the year. Some
consider it dreamlike, while others liken it to a fog like
London. A visit to this mysterious city would be the only
solution to this question.

Tours in Lima
Lima is the main entry into Peru and contains a plethora of
opportunities for the tourist. With world renowned museums,
incredible archeology, majestic scenery, art galleries, colorful
festivals and cuisine that is unmatchable, Lima is a fantastic city
to visit. Some tours include a visit to the many churches in
the city, some of which date to the 16th and 17th centuries.
Two of these churches are connected by a subterranean catacomb and
most churches contain beautiful paintings, tiles and masterfully
sculptured wood. Some areas of the city's old walls still
stand as a witness to the attacks by early pirates.
Bike tours, hiking tours, river adventures, museums, galleries, open
restaurants, historical and impressive architecture, marketplaces
selling everything imaginable, churches, kite flying, sailing,
boating, fishing and the list of things to do goes on. The
restaurants along the beach are a wonderful place to relax as you
walk the beach or tour along the coastline. There are also
many tours that will take you inland to the Inca ruins that will
amaze and thrill you. It is a place steeped in history,
mystery and excitement that you will seldom find anywhere in
America. This is because of the diversity of the populace and
continued growth. With all the excellent restaurants available
in Lima, it has become the gastronomical capital of Latin America.
One of the museums, the Gold, contains more than 6000 items of gold
and silver from the Andean culture. The second floor contains
an impressive arms collection. About 25 miles south of Lima sits an
archaeological site called Pachacamac which was the ceremonial
center of the Andeans for almost 4000 years. Once covered by
desert sands, you can now see the aqueducts, temples, plazas and
palaces originally built there.

Things to do in Lima Peru
The beaches are white, sandy and beautiful. The ocean water changes
to a multitude of blue and aqua hues that can be seen from the
cliffs above. Many restaurants have come to entertain, as well as
nourish the beachgoers with lavish meals, snacks or extravagant
dinners. Because of the regular mist that settles over the
city, the best and sunniest times to visit are December through
April. However, there are numerous festivities throughout the year.
The Lord of the Miracles festival is in October, with many street
parades, including a life-size reproduction of Jesus. There is much
ringing of the church bells, music and burning incense. During this
month, the bullfighting season begins and some of the best come to
Lima to compete. A wine festival is held in March and an
international fair in November.
Lima has some of the most interesting museums in South America. One,
the Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology contains a magnificent
collection of early pottery and textiles. Another one, more
horrific, is the Museum of the Inquisition, where you can still see
the underground dungeons and torture chambers.
Lima can be just about anything you are looking for. It can be
relaxed or energetic depending on your mood. There is money and
expensive autos and you can buy anything you want, if you have the
cash. The immigration of many ethnics, as well as the movement into
the city of peasants, give Lima a certain hospitality that can be
limitless once you have been there a while.
There are so many things to do in Lima, that you would be well
advised to check all the available information about it. Because it
sits on a cliff overlooking the beautiful Pacific ocean, with wide
expanses of white sandy beaches and dunes, there is a variety of
tours and sightseeing excursions available.
